Generate the competition rotation

Groups the approved divisions into blocks and sessions, sets the separation and warm-up rules and generates the running order with a repeatable seed.

Quick answer

Once entries close, the Generate tab of Rotation divides the approved divisions into blocks and sessions and draws each block with the rules you choose. With the same seed and the same entries, the result is always the same.

The Generate tab of Rotation creates the running order for the approved entries. It places the divisions into blocks and sessions, draws each block and works out the times and the warm-up. This guide explains what you decide before generating, what each rule does and what you see afterwards.

Before you start

Step by step

1. Open the Generate tab

Open Rotation from the competition menu and choose Generate. Each session appears as a card with its time and its competition mat. If a session is full, the card shows the time it ends.

2. Order the blocks

A block is a group of divisions that are drawn together. By default, each division forms its own block, in the order of the call for entries. Drag a block by its handle to move it, with the mouse. You can also use the keyboard: press Space to pick it up, the arrow keys to move it and Space to drop it. To move a block to another session, drop it on that session’s card, where it goes to the end, or open the ⋯ menu of the row and choose Move to another session…. Each block shows how many exercises it has and its estimated duration.

A block can continue into the next session. If a session runs out of time before the block finishes, the rest starts at the beginning of the next session. The card shows this with “continues in” or “continues from”, depending on the session.

3. Add breaks

Select Add break in the header of the session where you want it. In the dialogue, choose the Type: Break or Medal ceremony. Then enter the Name and the Duration in minutes. For a medal ceremony, the name is suggested from the Divisions you choose.

A break replaces the automatic break at that point and appears between the blocks. You can edit it later; the dialogue is titled Edit break. To remove it, confirm Remove this break?: the automatic break at that point comes back.

4. Check the rules

The Rules panel controls the order and the time between starts:

  • Shuffle within each block: draws the order of each block at random, in a way that can be repeated. If you turn it off, the order is the registration order.
  • Not consecutive for the same club: stops two consecutive exercises from the same block belonging to the same club.
  • Minimum gap for a gymnast: the minimum time between two starts for the same gymnast, measured from start to start. You can choose No gap, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15 or 20 min. It counts all of her exercises, including duo, trio and group, and it runs across blocks and sessions.
  • Between exercises: the time between the start of one exercise and the next, from 1 min to 5 min in steps of 15 s. The default is 2 min 30 s, for entry, salute, exit and score.
  • Between divisions: the time added when an exercise starts after one from a different block. The default is 2 min. You can choose No break, 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 min.
  • Warm-up: each warm-up mat has its own Time per gymnast on that mat. Leave it on Automatic, which lasts as long as the gymnast’s own exercise, or set a fixed time from 2 to 10 min. The route is shown in cards: “Mat 3”, “Mat 2” and, the last one, “Compete · Mat 1”.
  • Draw seed: the number that fixes the draw. The New seed button, with the reload icon, gives a different order under the same rules.

Each exercise takes its Time on the mat plus Between exercises. With 1 min 30 s on the mat and 2 min 30 s between exercises, each start takes 4 min. By default, the time on the mat is 1 min 30 s for individual and team, and 2 min 30 s for duo, trio and group.

5. Generate the rotation

Select Generate. If you have already made manual changes to the draft, the rotation asks you to confirm with Replace the draft. The notice says how many manual moves and edited breaks will be lost. Select Generate to continue, or Cancel to keep them and edit them in the Edit tab.

The rotation is calculated from the rules, the seed and the approved entries. With the same seed, the same entries and the same rules, the result is the same. If you want a different order, select New seed before generating.

The rotation uses a single competition mat. If you have several, it uses the first one and says so: “There are several competition mats. «Mat 1» will be used and the others ignored.”

If something goes wrong

  • “There are no approved exercises to place in the rotation.”: approve entries before generating.
  • “The competition has finished: the rotation can no longer be changed.” or “The competition is cancelled: there is no rotation to change.”: the competition does not allow changes to the rotation.
  • “The rotation changed while you were editing it. Reload to see the latest version.”: someone else has changed the draft. Reload the page.
  • “There are N unassigned divisions. They will not appear in the rotation until you put them in a block.”: the Unassigned section lists the divisions that are not yet in any block.
