Quick answer
The simulation checks for 10 minutes that every track on the device is complete and can be decoded, without depending on the network. The sound check confirms that it can be heard before the competition.
These are the last two steps of the preparation wizard. You do them once the earlier ones are done, from Venue in the competition menu. Neither replaces a real test at the venue.
Before you start
- Do these steps after Download music and Rotation and participants. The wizard goes in order.
- The simulation does not replace a real test at the venue with the wifi switched off. Test that way too, the day before, with the device and the sound system you will use.
- Have the sound system connected and the volume low to begin with. Close any other apps that use audio.
Step by step
1. Select Simulate offline
In the Simulate offline step, select Simulate offline. The page reloads with the simulation on and starts checking the tracks. While it lasts, the notice Offline simulation · ends in appears, followed by the time left. The simulation lasts 10 minutes and ends by itself.
During the simulation, the device uses only what it has stored. Anything it asks of the network fails.
2. Read the check on each track
For each track, the wizard checks these things, in this order:
- that the track is stored on the device;
- that it is the size it should be;
- that its content matches the manifest (SHA-256);
- that the audio can be decoded;
- that its duration matches the manifest, within a margin of 1 second.
If a track fails, the list shows the exercise and the cause:
- Not on this device;
- Size does not match;
- Content does not match;
- Audio cannot be decoded;
- Duration does not match the manifest.
3. Repeat or download again
Repeat checks all the tracks again. If there are failures, Download again appears: it deletes the tracks that fail and downloads them once more. After that, the step stays pending until a new simulation passes.
4. Leave the simulation
Select Exit simulation to return to normal mode. If you do not, the simulation ends by itself after 10 minutes. The Simulate offline step is done when all the tracks have passed the check.
5. Run the sound check
In the Sound check step, select Play the test. A one-second tone plays and then an eight-second excerpt from the middle of the first piece of music. The sound only starts when you select the button.
If it sounds good, select Sounds good and the step is done. If you cannot hear it, select Can’t hear it. These tips appear:
- Turn up the volume on the device and in the browser.
- Check the audio output: speakers, headphones or Bluetooth.
- On iPhone and iPad, check that the silent switch is off.
- Close any other apps that are using the audio.
Then you can run the test again with Repeat the test.
If something goes wrong
- “Not on this device” or “Size does not match”: select Download again and wait for the download to finish.
- “Audio cannot be decoded”: download that track again. If it fails again, do not use it on this device: use the backup for that music and check the file in Review the competition’s music.
- “Duration does not match the manifest”: select Download again. If it fails again, use the backup and check the music in the same guide.
- “Can’t hear it”: follow the sound check tips and run it again. If nothing plays, try another sound system.
Next step
- Prepare the device for the venue: the six steps of the wizard, from start to finish.
- Run the music during the competition: how the session is run in venue mode.
- Compatible devices for the venue: which devices and browsers work.
- Review the competition’s music: which music is missing and how to notify the clubs.
