Quick answer
For venue mode, the laptop with Chrome or Edge and the Android tablet with Chrome are official. The iPad with Safari works with the app installed, on a best-effort basis.
Venue mode runs in the device’s own browser and stores the rotation and the music there. This guide says which devices are official, what the browser needs and how to get ready for competition day.
Before you start
- The official devices are a laptop with Chrome or Edge and an Android tablet with Chrome.
- The iPad with Safari works on a best-effort basis: the app has to be installed, and it does not have the same guarantee as the official devices.
- Phones are not among the official devices. Other browsers or devices are not listed as official. If you try them, the wizard will tell you which feature they lack.
- In this first version, the organising club has to be in Spain.
Step by step
1. Check that the browser has what it needs
The wizard checks five features before starting: file storage (OPFS), cryptographic verification (SubtleCrypto), audio (AudioContext), Service Worker and IndexedDB. If any is missing, This browser cannot prepare venue mode appears with the list of what is missing, under Missing:.
2. Install the app according to the device
- On a laptop, installing is optional. You can continue without installing, by confirming the tick box that the preparation guide explains.
- On an Android tablet, the app has to be installed before the music is downloaded.
- On an iPad, the app has to be added to the Home Screen and opened from its icon. Until then, the download stays blocked.
3. Check the space and persistence
The Space step shows how much the competition needs and how much is free. The wizard asks the browser for persistent storage. If it does not grant it, the browser could delete the music if storage runs short: the wizard asks you to tick I understand and the device appears as Not persistent.
The music changes from one competition to another, so the space needed changes too. The wizard calculates it, and there is no fixed figure that suits every case.
4. Bring two prepared devices
Recommendation: bring one device to the venue as Music desk and another as Backup, both prepared with the same rotation. If the first fails, the second takes over with Start here. The guide Run the music during the competition explains how.
During the session, keep the device plugged in. With a low battery, the system may dim the screen or switch it off.
Venue mode works with a connected wifi even if it has no internet access. The app’s pages are read from what is stored on the device. Only uploading the log needs a network with internet access.
5. Test with the wifi switched off
Before the day, run the offline simulation and the sound check with the device you will use. The guide Simulate offline and run the sound check explains the steps.
If something goes wrong
- “This browser cannot prepare venue mode”: use Chrome or Edge on the laptop, or Chrome on the Android tablet. If the browser is another one, check the list of missing features.
- “The Service Worker does not control this page yet. Reload the tab.”: reload the page. If nothing changes, close the app and open it again from its icon.
- “This browser cannot keep the screen on.”: keep the device plugged in and check the system’s power settings.
- “The browser could delete the music if storage runs short”: free up space before the competition, or use the backup device for that music.
Next step
- Prepare the device for the venue: the steps of the wizard, from start to finish.
- Simulate offline and run the sound check: the check without a network and the sound check.
- Run the music during the competition: how the session is run in venue mode.
- Review the competition’s music: which music is missing and how to notify the clubs.
